Writers’ Workshop
Three Kinds of Workshops
Weekly Sessions to Grow Great Writers
Writers’ Workshops are a powerful tool to grow great writers. What helps a writer grow in creativity and enthusiasm? It’s about having an atmosphere of learning and exploring with words, surrounded by your friends. It’s the book club you always wanted with friends, where friendships are key to learning from one another, and all feel save to be vulnerable with expression. Art is very much like this. And writing should inspire this same feeling of creating something new, worth treasuring. I hope to share this love of writing through a custom Writers’ Workshop with your children!
Early Writers
Taking great stories from life is the way to start writing. We explore getting ideas from real life, writing about things we know, and then we move on to learn new things and write more. Students will work on generating and developing ideas, writing conventions, and penmanship.
Recommended for grades 1-2
Craft & Creativity
Students in this workshop have mastered the basics of writing and are ready to learn more about narrative, expository, and persuasive writing styles. We will study what makes writing engaging, compelling, and worth writing about. We will take topics we love and breathe life into them on the page.
Recommended for grades 3-5
Writing Mentors
Now that students have learned the basics of good writing, we focus in this workshop on studying what other great writers do, identifying what makes good writing interesting. We will examine excerpts from great authors each session to learn from mentors, all while working on developing our own writing style. Writers will share their writing in each session and gain new skills to hone their craft and creativity as well.
Recommended for grades 6 and up.
